PHILOMENA MASTERS

Mosaic and Glass Artist

When my career of 20 years in the business world came to an end through ill health in 1997, I never dreamed that the Mosaic Art Therapy I was introduced to in Joondalup Hospital, would change the course of my life! I was at the peak of my business career when I suffered several minor strokes and a brain bleed followed by a mental breakdown. On returning home, I took a course in Mosaics and Ceramics …. and from that moment I wanted to be the best I could be!

The door closed on my professional life and an exciting new door opened!

Three years later, quite by chance, I was introduced to the world of Kiln-fired Art Glass and I developed a new passion.  Always eager to learn new techniques, attended week-long workshops over the next few years with world famous glass artists including Narcissus Quagliata from Mexico, Rudi Gritsch from Austria, Richard Parrish, Judi Elliot, Catherine Newell and Stephen Klein from the USA and Bob Leatherbarrow from Canada. Being exposed to the wonders of glass art in a different way, keeps me fresh and excited.

Each piece that you choose to own is unique. Platters, bowls, wall panels, vases, mosaics and even dichroic jewelry all take a considerable time to create.

What do I enjoy the most? Sharing my skills with others in my workshops held in my Wanneroo studio.  The thrill of seeing others create something they never believed was possible gives me a ‘real buzz’.

I have curated nearly thirty exhibitions with a percentage of each sale made by participating artists, going to a charity. Together with our ‘Decorating Ducks For Depression’ Charity Auctions we have raised more than $60,000.

Highlights – Commissioned by the WA Government to produce Australian themed pieces for overseas delegates. The University of Western Australia commissioning two large bowls for the Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. Receiving the Karl Farrell Inspiration Award sponsored by ‘designedge fashion incubator’ and being the talkback guest on 6PR’s Nightline, Curtin FM and Kalamunda Community Radio.
